Had a 2000 TuRD Taco a few years ago. Miss it dearly and want another truck. I don’t want anything huge and obnoxious. Honestly, the Tacoma is the right size, but a half-ton isn’t out of the question. I’ve looked and found 10 y/o Tacomas with less than 140k miles that looked clean and I don’t think that’s a bad choice. What do you guys think/recommend?

As long as the rust isn’t a problem/frame has been replaced, the Taco is the most solid choice. A Ranger comes a very close second though.

Is there a Nissan alternative? The reliability isn’t legendary, but it’s good, and the prices are probably lower.

Oh shit - the Honda Ridgeline! Always wanted one after I drove it. And dead reliable.

A rust-free late ‘90s/early ‘00s Tacoma is probably your best bet. Just get the best example in your price range in your area.

How about a D21 4x4/early frontier

I find the tailgate/bedrail design to be one of the worst automotive details in existence. Honestly WTF??? did they order the wrong part and just ‘eh close enough, lets go get some sake?

The end of my taco ownership was the rusted frame. Toyota bought it from me, I took the money and bought my 2002. But, still miss having a truck. Especially since I would use the hell out of it. I’ve hauled lumber with the 02 (roof rack)

You could also go the route with the 4Runner, which has the boxed frame from the Hilux, instead of the Taco frame. I’ve hauled 25+ bags of mulch in the back of mine.

Just get another Tacoma. I had a 98 v6 5spd and it never let me down with 220k miles when I sold it.
Taco is always the answer.

You know - it’s not the truck for the farmer who used to deliver my hay back in the 80s when I had horses - that was a Cummins Turbodiesel Dodge. So I think the Ridgeline is friendly to those who need minor towing and hauling and decent comfort. I loved it when I drove it, and I drove it more than that Chevy pickup bed thingy that I can’t recall the name of .... This thing is worth a look.

Just got a 2000 Tundra in that range. 167,xxx miles and I expect to get way more than that out of it. It feels smaller than today's trucks so size is comparable to what you're looking for. I used to have a 2002 Ram 1500 with over 200,xxx in that price range. Thing was falling apart everywhere though. First Gen Tundra or comparable Tacoma is the way to go.

Dakota. They’re cheap, powerful, capable and as long as you get the manual, nearly indestructible. Where else can you get a midsize truck with a V8 and a 5 (or 6!) speed manny?

Have to get an auto so my mom can also use it. Secondly, we’re about to get rid of a late 90s Dodge because it is a real piece of shit. Don’t want to deal with that engineering again.
